Whether you’re a professional, you want to learn more about your own health, understanding metabolic panels is an important part of healthcare overall. In today’s blog, we will explore comprehensive metabolic panels, including what it is, what is measured, when to get tested, and how to prepare for it.

															What Are Metabolic Panels?
Comprehensive metabolic panels (CMPs) are a type of blood test that measures various substances in your blood, including electrolytes, glucose, and kidney and liver function markers. These tests can help your healthcare provider determine if you have any underlying health conditions or if your current treatment plan is working effectively.
What Is Measured During A Metabolic Panel?
A metabolic test typically measures some of the following substances, of which a few have already been mentioned:
- Glucose – This measures the amount of sugar in your blood. High levels of glucose can indicate diabetes or other conditions.
- Electrolytes – Electrolytes are minerals in your body that help regulate fluid balance, muscle function, and other important processes. The CMP typically measures levels of sodium, potassium, and chloride.
- Kidney Function Markers – CMP measures levels of creatinine and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) to determine how well your kidneys are functioning. High levels of these markers may indicate kidney damage or disease.
- Liver Function Markers – CMP also measures levels of proteins, enzymes, and bilirubin to determine how well your liver is functioning. High levels of these markers may indicate liver damage or disease.
When To Get Tested
Getting tested for a metabolic panel, or having your healthcare physician authorize a test for you. can be a possibility for a multitude of reasons. Routine check-ups are one of the most common reasons to receive a CMP, as your healthcare provider may want to ensure that your body is functioning normally.
Additionally, if you are experiencing symptoms such as fatigue, abdominal pain, or jaundice, or are taking medications that can affect your kidney or liver function, then your healthcare provider may recommend a metabolic panel to be conducted to either help diagnose any underlying conditions or to monitor your levels and ensure that any medications you are taking are not causing harm to your body.
How To Prepare For Testing
Preparing for a metabolic panel is very simple. Typically, depending on what your provider’s instructions are, you may need to fast anywhere from 8-12 hours prior to testing, or you may need to stay hydrated before–and during–the test as dehydration can affect your electrolyte levels, leading to inaccurate results.
Additionally, you may be instructed to stop taking certain medications or supplements that could affect your test results. Be sure to inform your healthcare provider and the laboratory of any medications you are taking for accurate directions. Of course, a CMP is a blood test, so wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to your arm, as the test is usually conducted through a venipuncture in the arm.
